UST Projector Screen vs Wall: What Changes?
A wall can produce an image, but a UST projector is unusually sensitive to surface flatness because its light hits the wall at a steep angle.

Why wall texture is more visible with UST
Small bumps, waves and paint texture can become more obvious because the projector light skims upward across the surface. A wall that looks flat under normal room lighting may reveal distortion once a UST image is projected onto it.
What a dedicated screen adds
A fixed-frame screen provides a tensioned, predictable surface. ALR or Fresnel optical layers can also redirect projector light toward viewers and reduce the effect of room light.
When a wall is acceptable
If you are testing placement, using the projector temporarily, or have a genuinely flat, smooth wall in a dark room, projecting directly onto the wall can be useful. It is a low-risk way to confirm size and furniture placement before buying a screen.
When the screen becomes the upgrade
If daytime contrast, uniform geometry or image consistency matters, a dedicated UST screen is usually the more controlled solution. The improvement is not just color; it is also surface flatness and predictable light handling.
A smart sequence
Test the projector on the wall first, mark the desired image size, measure your seating angles, then choose the screen. That keeps the expensive decision tied to the room you actually have.
Frequently asked questions
Will a white wall damage a UST projector?
No. The issue is image quality, not projector safety.
Do I need special paint instead of a screen?
Projector paint can improve a wall, but it does not create the same directional optical structure as a UST ALR screen.
Can I decide screen size by projecting on the wall first?
Yes. That is a practical way to test 100 versus 120 inches before committing.
