ALR Screens for UST Projectors: A Practical Buying Guide
“ALR” is a broad label. What matters is whether the screen's optical structure matches a UST projector and the light sources in your room.

ALR does not mean 'blocks all room light'
Ambient light rejecting screens are directional optical surfaces, not blackout curtains. Their performance depends on where the projector and unwanted light sources sit relative to the screen.
UST-specific ALR matters
UST light arrives from below at a steep angle. A screen designed for a standard projector can redirect that light away from the viewer. For a laser TV or other UST, choose a surface explicitly designed for UST geometry.
Fresnel versus lenticular ALR
Lenticular screens typically prioritize overhead-light rejection and a wide viewing area. Fresnel designs can reject more side light and often deliver strong centered brightness, but they usually ask you to pay closer attention to seating angle.
Gain is only one part of the picture
A higher gain number does not automatically mean a better screen. Higher on-axis brightness can come with a narrower viewing cone. Contrast, room light, projector brightness and seating layout all interact.
A room-first selection method
Start by standing where the screen will go and identify the strongest light source. Then sit in the widest seating position. Those two observations—light direction and seating spread—often tell you more than a generic 'best ALR screen' list.
Frequently asked questions
What does ALR stand for?
Ambient Light Rejecting.
Is CLR different from ALR?
CLR is often used to emphasize rejection of ceiling light. In UST shopping, the terms can overlap, so inspect the actual optical structure rather than relying only on the label.
Can ALR improve black levels?
In ambient light, reducing stray light reaching the viewer can improve perceived contrast and make dark areas look less washed out.
